Scouting America ยท Merit Badge
Artificial Intelligence
New for 2026. Define AI and automation, explore ethics, deepfakes, and prompt engineering. Complete a project or teach a lesson on AI.
Counselor Qualifications
Brand-new badge (2025 requirements). I work hands-on with AI-assisted engineering workflows daily. The strongest project path is 7(b): design and teach a short AI lesson to the patrol โ it forces Scouts to understand before they can explain.
Dustin Gamble โ B.S. and M.S. Aerospace Engineering; Technical Fellow at Lockheed Martin; registered Scouting America Merit Badge Counselor (Los Padres Council).
My Counselor Plan
My operating notes for counseling this badge. Scouts can skim for context; other counselors are welcome to borrow what's useful.
- Start with the vocabulary list in req 1. Don't let Scouts skip it โ the rest of the badge depends on it.
- For req 2(d) and 4(b), I'll bring the 'AI or Not?' and 'What Would You Do?' scenario decks (simple printed cards).
- For req 7(a), require a written objective + data plan + ethics note before any building starts.
- For req 5 (deepfakes), show one obvious deepfake example + one subtle one; emphasize consent and law.
- Keep a running log of career interviews Scouts complete so the next Scout has a head-start list.
- Cross-badge tie-in: the Space Exploration Telemetry Rocket project is a great AI-assisted coding capstone. Scouts use an AI tool to help write and debug the T-Beam firmware and Heltec ground-logger in six stages (sensors โ message โ LoRa transmit โ receive โ CSV log โ post-flight analysis), which demonstrates responsible, supervised AI use on real embedded code.

Safety and Youth Protection
All merit badge counseling sessions follow Scouting America's Guide to Safe Scouting. Scouts meet with me either accompanied by a parent or guardian, or in a group with at least one other Scout and one other registered adult present. I hold current Safeguarding Youth training.
